Commonly sold as just "parakeets" in the United State, and sometimes referred to as "love birds", budgerigars are small grass seed-eating parakeets native to the savannas of Australia, and they are the only member of their genus, Melopsittacus. 

Budgies are the most popular and commonly kept pet bird due to their small size, colorful plumage, playful antics, and intelligence! Both males and females can learn to talk, though it typically requires a lot of time and patience to teach them. Budgies groom each other socially, so they can also learn to enjoy head scritches from their favorite person. 

American budgerigars can live 10-15+ years with proper care.
