Commonly sold as just "parakeets" in the United States, budgerigars are a small grass seed-eating parakeet native to the savannas of Australia, and are the only member of their genus. With big personalities in a tiny package, they make for highly curious and entertaining pets.
American budgerigars can live for 10-15+ years with proper care.
Colors available include green, blue, opaline, yellowface, pastel, greywing, clearwing, pied, spangle, and combinations of these.
The English variety of budgerigar has been selectively bred for a larger body type and longer feathers. They tend to have a calmer temperament than their wild-type cousins, but the largest-bodied and longest-feathered may not fly skillfully. They are still playful little clowns and a true joy to keep as pets!
English budgerigars can live for 7-10+ years with proper care.
Colors available include green, blue, grey, yellowface, opaline, cinnamon, spangle, and combinations of these.
Adorably nicknamed "linnies", these little birds should be termed parrots rather than parakeets. While all parakeets are parrots, linnies are unlike other parakeets, with short tails, dextrous feet and tongues, and (fun fact) they don't poop while they sleep! They are generally a quieter species that love to burrow and explore nooks and crannies - often natural "pocket-parrots”!
Linnies can live for 10-15+ years with proper care.
Colors include dark green, cobalt, olive, mauve, lutino and albino.
Native to the savannah's of Australia, cockatiels are the smallest species in the cockatoo family, and also the only member of their genus. Probably one of the most well-studied pet parrots, they are highly inquisitive, playful, and known for their love of music. Females tend to be quieter and more cuddly, while males prefer to show off and may learn to whistle their favorite tunes!
Cockatiels can live for 20-25+ years with proper care.
Colors include natural grey and pearl.
Bourkes are also native to Australia's savannas, and also recently classified into their own genus. Bourkes are crepuscular, meaning they are most active early in the day and in the evening. They primarily nap midday. Bourkes don't preen one another, so they may never learn to enjoy head scritches, but they are sweet, intelligent, and one of the quietest and least destructive species of pet parrot. Photo
Bourkes can live for 15-20+ years with proper care.
